Who is the President of South Africa?

by Klaus on 19. November 2008

Who is the President of South Africa? The incumbent President of the Republic of South Africa is Kgalema Motlanthe who was elected as Interim President on 25 September 2008.

Kgalema Motlanthe is member of the ANC (African National Congress) party. His precursor Thabo Mbeki served as President from 1999 to September 2008. On 20 September 2008, Thabo Mbeki had announced his resignation after the ANC National Executive Committee decided to no longer support Mbeki in parliament.

The ANC National Executive Committee justified this decision by allegations against Mbeki. They assume that Mbeki had tried to undermine Jacob Zuma’s chances of succeeding him in the next general elections in April 2009 by interfering in a corruption case against ANC leader Jacob Zuma to ensure that his rival was prosecuted.

Zuma is expected to become President of South Africa in scheduled elections in 2009.
